“Paws & Effect” Contest Spotlight:
Mercy Cares is a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation that funds Mercy Pet Clinic in Houston, Texas, and supports the animal welfare community by serving the needs of local shelters, rescue organizations, and low-income families seeking to care for their pets.
We provide support for pets and those who serve them
We do this by addressing 3 key areas along the holistic continuum of care for animal caregivers:
We provide compassionate veterinary care for animals in need at Mercy Pet Clinic in Houston, Texas;
We also offer health + wellness programs for the community of caregivers who save, rescue and re-home them;
We foster connections through collaboration to help make your family and other healthy, happy, and complete.
You’ve all heard the phrase “It takes a village” and this month Mercy Cares is celebrating the many ‘villages’ of rescue groups around the city of Houston through the “Paws + Effect” Contest, in collaboration with Sunset Animal Hospital.
More than 100 distinct animal rescue groups were nominated by friends and supporters in the community for the contest which allows the public to VOTE HERE for their favorite organization for the chance to win $2,000 | $1,000 | or $500 in clinic credit at Mercy Pet Clinic thanks to the generous support of Sunset Animal Hospital.
This is Sassy’s Story…
On one of the coldest nights in 2019, Houston PetSet received a call from a partnering organization that a very pregnant stray dog was wandering the streets. Houston PetSet took this pregnant mama dog, later named Sassy, to Mercy Pet Clinic to be examined. Because Houston PetSet isn’t a rescue organization it was beginning to look grim for this pup who needed a foster to care for her, but the staff at Mercy Pet Clinic was not going to let this mama have her puppies in the cold; the clinic stepped up and agreed to board Sassy in-house. That night the temperature dropped below freezing but Sassy was able to give birth to a litter of eight adorable puppies in the comfort of the nice warm clinic.
As they say, it really does take a village
A few months later Sassy and her pups joined nearly 100 other furry friends to take a road trip north to Minnesota rescue groups, Angel of Hope Rescue and Ruff Start Rescue. Sassy and her pups were welcomed by loving forever homes after locating to Minnesota. Lundquist Faust of Houston PetSet states;
“Even though Houston PetSet isn’t a rescue organization, we can never turn a blind eye to animals that are suffering. When one of our partner organizations called us about a pregnant stray dog, we knew we had to help…Collaboration is at the core of what we do, and we were able to save Sassy and her puppies because of the many partners that were involved in rescuing her and delivering her babies. We could not have guaranteed her safety without the support of Mercy.”
The story of taking Sassy and her pups in, is one played out over and over again at Mercy Pet Clinic. The clinic not only offers high quality medical care but very frequently offers support to organizations like Houston PetSet that aren’t able to locate an immediate foster. Mercy Cares is so proud to partner with organizations like Houston PetSet that have a mission of ending companion animal homelessness.
